NASA + Neuroscience + RomCom + You’ve Got Mail = the nerdlove book you never want to end.
Did I ever tell you I majored in neuroscience with a concentration in psychobiology? Yup, me. I am endlessly fascinated by the brain and everything it is capable of. AND I have two favorite movies that will forever be my favorite movies. One of them is You’ve Got Mail.
Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood was literally written for me. Calling dibs on Levi if he’s actually real somewhere.
I finished this book in 3 sittings, and it incorporated all the best nerdy things. We’re talkin’ neuroscience, tall dark and handsome broody men with PhDs and green eyes, NASA, cute animals, women in STEM, anonymous Twitter accounts, strong independent women, and individuals at the top of their profession. I even learned some really funny terms related to sexism in the workplace, such as Sausage Referencing. This is when a man vouches for a woman so other men accept her ideas and instructions. 🤮 That’s how I feel about that. (Hello, my name is Dr. Carolyn Norton. I have a BS in Neuroscience with a concentration in psychobiology, and minors in chemistry and english. I have a DMD and an FAGD. I got a perfect score on the organic chemistry portion of the DAT, literally P E R F E C T. I have been out of school and practicing dentistry for 8.5 years. I still encounter and fight sexism in the workplace.)
Bee is a neuroscientist who is recruited to co-lead a project at NASA with her grad school arch-nemesis, Levi. He appears to be sabotaging Bee every step of the way, until we realize he is actually doing everything in his power to help her. Eventually we find out the two big reasons why.
FYI Bee also spent her formative years being shuffled from one family member’s home to the next all across Europe after her parents died. All she wants is love and stability, and doesn’t trust either. Cue failed engagement story. She is now married to science and refuses to give herself hope for anything but.
This romcom novel follows the evolution of Bee and Levi’s relationship from nemeses to lovers, and you will love every page they are on together.
Bee’s gothy research assistant is definitely a caricature of someone I went to high school with. @WhatWouldMarieDo brings us the You’ve Got Mail twist. And Levi is the most caring, thoughtful, sexy, dark, I-am-going-to-take-you, male lead we all want up in our NASA lab. Not to mention, the way Hazelwood titles each chapter after a different part of the brain tickles my noodle.
I wish I could read this book all over again for the first time. It’s that good.
Rating: 5 Teeth
This book is a virgin tooth that has never been prepped before and is absolutely perfect. (Don’t worry, no one is a virgin in this novel. 😂) Ali Hazelwood, I love your brain. 🧠💜 This is the perfect read to escape and enjoy, and just fall into love with some amazing characters.
