I fucking love high fives. Thank you Mel.

I know you guys might be thinking man, this book must be a load of Gouda, but you’re wrong. This book is amazing. GET πŸ‘πŸ» THE πŸ‘πŸ» AUDIOBOOK πŸ‘πŸ». Mel Robbins reads it herself, and hearing such an amazing motivational speaker read her entire book to you line by line is the only way to do it.

I read this book right before attending Tony Robins’ UPW event, and a lot of the tips for changing your state and choosing how you show up to live your life are the same. These are vibes I suggest listening to on your way to work in the morning, or even while on the stairmaster at the gym. Mel gives you the heart to heart talk, and subsequently, the kick in the ass you need to stop waiting for motivation or some cosmic sign. Motivation is bullshit and unpredictable and never there when you need it. You create your life.

tan(I hate the saying β€œmeant to be”. When good things happen it is because I made them happen. When unexpected things happen it wasn’t β€œmeant to be”- it was completely random, or means I failed somehow. β€œMeant to be” just makes people feel better. I do believe in the karmic energy of the universe, and manifesting, not to mention hard work. I also believe in using failures as teachers. Just never β€œmeant to be”.

Let’s continue.)

The basis of this book is starting every day with high-fiving yourself in the mirror. I know this sounds odd, but just do it. It is biologically impossible to feel bad about yourself in that moment. I like to add in a little, β€œhey girl, I see you, you’re amazing” when I do this at home. Mel goes into all the neurodetails on how this action changes your brain. This small step starts building your wins and momentum to create a high five day, a high five week, a year, a life. Heck, I want a high five life. My sister and I high five all the time now. Had to clean the whole house because we invited company over for dinner. Ugh… no problem! We high-fived and then crushed it, with j  o  y.

Mel Robbins also explores subjects in this book that seriously illuminated small yet significant moments from my past. β€œWhen you were a kid did you ever get picked on or made fun of? And then you internalized it, stuffed it deep down, and made it mean that something was wrong with you? Well guess what, there was nothing wrong with you. The person who did the mean thing, there was something wrong with them.”    BOOM. 🀯    As a kid you have no idea. How much time did I waste growing up being insecure, sensitive, and shy because of this exact concept and not knowing it wasn’t me? Never. Again.

Want to do another emotional back flip? β€œWhen you find yourself riddled with doubt, it’s not that the world told you you can’t do this or you can’t have this. You told yourself that. Their success (maybe someone you really envy on the gram?) is proof that you can have it too. Jealousy is blocked desire.” Get crystal clear on what you want. If you’re not sure, take a minute and ask yourself- Who am I jealous of and why? Is it really just blocked desire? You can have and choose and explore and be whoever you want. There’s proof everywhere that it is possible.

Which brings us to the reticular activating system (RAS). This is the part of your brain that is constantly scanning and filtering data. It decides what is important and not. Like when you buy a black Nissan Rogue and all of a sudden you see them everywhere. The RAS is why. Manifesting, vision boards, journaling about your dreams and desires, signs, coincidences, documenting any evidence you can find to support what you want is helping your RAS. The more it knows what’s important, the more frequently and easily you will find it in your life. You can only see what you want to see. Why not give your brain some help picking out the good stuff?

This is only the tip of the iceberg from Mel.

Rating: 5 Teeth

This book is the surprise perfect Invisalign case. You know when you have a really challenging case, and the patient keeps coming back for check-ups and everything is tracking perfectly? And you’re just like, no way. Each chapter and win builds upon the next. I’ve read a lot of other books with largely identical concepts, but Mel Robbins explains it differently. She is authentic and real and I really believe her. I do high five myself in the mirror every morning now. I follow her Rx for a high five morning, a routine I can actually stick to. I keep coming back to it, and every day keeps getting better.
